July 2018

July 11, 2018 to July 13, 2018 - Attending the Pacific Forest Trust Board of Directors meeting in Mount Shasta and field trip to McCloud Soda Springs.  

July 9, 2018 - Met with the Oral Health Leadership Team in Humboldt County.  We have almost 52,000 people who qualify for MediCal who experience challenges with acquiring a dental home. Fortunately the State is providing funding to counties to plan for better oral health access!  Education and workforce concerns are a big part of future solutions.

July 5, 2018 - Spoke at a Social Work in the Community class about what data is showing about challenges we are facing in Humboldt County around substance use, access to health care, mortality and morbidity, and housing.  Wow, my data presentations are sometimes quite a bummer. I told the students I'd understand if they didn't want to invite me to their next cocktail party.

July 2, 2018 - Had dinner with congressman Jared Huffman and friends. Wonderful time to catch up on what's happening in DC!

June 19, 2018 - Attending the Rural County Representatives of California (RCRC) Board Meeting. RCRC staff always do an amazing job of tracking and advocating for rural counties!

June 10, 2018 - June 6, 2018 -- Spent the day in Del Norte County catching up on the great work the Del Nort Comunity Food Council is doing and all of the programs and events happening for this summer for youth.

May 21, 2018 to May 23, 2018 - Attending the National Rural Assembly http://ruralassembly.org This year’s theme is “Building Civic Courage”.  Connecting with rural leaders from across the country facing amazing challenges and making a differences for communities. I have the honor of being on stage for the “Standing on Their Shoulders panel” otherwise known as the “Elders Panel” Yes, I’m known as an “old soul” when it comes to rural activism.

May 18, 2018 - Oh my, the Humboldt Workforce Development Board held an amazing presentation from Vinz Koller of Social Policy Research Associate on the Swiss model of apprenticeships, The apprenticeship program starts in the high schools! Later, we discussed how we could build a meaningful apprenticeship program in Humboldt County. One of the key takeaways for me from his talk was the difference between apprenticeships and internships. Internships are about companies giving their time to train students and apprenticeships are about letting students give value to a company while learning. Lots of food for thought!

May 17, 2018 - Helped host a regional meeting on the upcoming Census 2020 effort in California. Can you believe it’s time again? There was a group of 30 regional leaders interested in working to get a better count of “Hard-to-Count” populations in the Redwood Coast Region. Thanks to Adelina G. Zendejas, Deputy Director, Census 2020 – California Complete Count from the Governor’s Office of Planning and Research and the folks Collaboration and Consensus Program at California State University, Sacramento for putting the meeting together. May 16, 2018 - Had a wonderful meeting at the Waterfront Recovery Center in Eureka. The Center is doing amazing work to help people recover from their addiction.

May 14, 2018 - Have a meeting with the Healthcare Industry, education and workforce leaders to talk about Health Career Pathways and Success (Soft) Skills training.

May 10, 2018 - Meet with Tribal leaders and staff for the Resighini Rancheria to discuss their 2018-2019 plans for their community garden, healthy eating and drinking and physical activities as part of the Healthy Environment = Healthy of the People project.

May 8, 2018 - The Humboldt State University Academic Senate voted to approve creation of a RN to BSN program. HSU has been working with College of the Redwoods and Senator McGuire to create new opportunities for health care education in the Redwood Coast RegionNext step is a fundraising campaign to hire faculty.

April 25, 2018 to April 26, 2018 - Glad to have representatives from the Board of Supervisors of 35 counties and attending the the Rural County Representatives of California (RCRC) meeting in Ferndale CA. I had the honor of spending a morning setting up meetings with RCRC staff on economic opportunities around climate change, specialty agriculture and Cannabis. This year’s Chairman of the RCRC board is my dear friend Humboldt County Supervisor Rex Bohn.

April 23, 2018 to April 26, 2018 - Loving the Hands on Health Conference, hosted by United Indian Health Services at the Bear River Casino in Loleta CA.  Tribal leaders from all of country have come to spend the week attending hands-on workshops delivered in a “train the trainer” style addressing traditional foods, physical activity, and cultural wellness thanks to the “Good Health and Wellness in Indian Country” grant from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

April 9, 2018 - Attending a two-day Rural Development Innovation Group meeting in Washington DC. More on the group.

April 4, 2018 - Listen into the “Forest Resiliency, Environment & Economic Development” Meeting hosted by the Rural County Representatives of California, the Golden State Financing Authority and the University of California, Agriculture and Natural Resources which took place in Sacramento.

April 2, 2018 - Attended the Memorial of Herrmann Spetzler, longtime CEO of Open Door Community Health Clinics, a Humboldt and Del Norte county Federally Quality Health Clinic. Herrmann was instrumental in the creation of the California Center for Rural Policy. He will be dearly missed. Read the North Coast Journal article.

March 22, 2018 - Attended the Humboldt Economic Summit in Fortuna CA. The event included 10 minute presentations from representatives of communities across Humboldt County, giving an overview of economic challenges, opportunities and projects. March 13, 2018 - On vacation in Florida with my folks. End of the week is Mom’s birthday.

March 7, 2018 - I had the pleasure of interviewing on stage Harold Feld, Senior Vice President for Public Knowledge, one of the nation’s premier consumer advocacy organizations working at the intersection of copyright, telecommunications and the Internet, at the 2018 Aspen Institute Summit on Inequality and Opportunity with attendance of 400+ policy makers, civic leaders, social entrepreneurs, philanthropists, and practitioners from all over the country for a day of ideas, problem solving, and values-based exchange. March 1, 2018 - I got to put my big policy hat on! I spent two days meeting with north coast non-profit organizations and offer them a 1 hour Policy Consultation. It was great fun hearing from non-profits that are growing their capability to advocate for the populations and places they serve.

February 21, 2018 - Met with John Kessler with the California State Controller’s office. One big takeaway from the meeting is that rural folks need to do a better job promoting the Earned Income Tax Credit program (ETIC). A lot of money that could help low income rural families is getting left on the table.

February 14, 2018 - Had dinner with former Commissioner J.K. Sandoval, who was the first Hispanic commissioner on the California Public Utilities Commission. Catherine is a professor at Santa Clara University School of Law and is a champion for energy, broadband and water policy for rural communities. Was glad that Humboldt Access Foundation’s Executive Director Sean McLaughlin and his wife Lori Taketa works at the Redwood Region Energy Authority were willing to spend Valentine’s Day with us!

February 13, 2018 - Went to see Ron Finley the “guerilla gardener” tonight discuss food deserts and his program in LA to promote healthy food access. Ron speaks Truth to Power and a fun time was had by all!

February 9, 2018 - Attended an all-day Child Abuse Prevention Coordinating Council of Humboldt County planning meeting.

January 31, 2018 to February 1, 2018 - Attending The California Endowment’s Building Healthy Community Del Norte and Tribal Lands communitywide meeting. CCRP is honored to be a partner on this 10-year initiative.

January 24, 2018 - Attended a “Good Health and Wellness in Indian Country” Annual Tribal Leaders Luncheon in Klamath, CA. I have the honor of working with United Indian Health Services and 9 California coastal Tribes to provide technical assistance and evaluation on Centers for Disease Control initiative. The Tribes are doing amazing work on increasing physical activity, traditional food access, and to reduced commercial tobacco use.

January 23, 2018 - Was the speaker at the Ferndale CA Indivisible Club. Wow! It was my first Indivisible meeting and I was amazed at the turnout!

January 22, 2018 - Monthly meeting with the Northcoast Health Leadership Team, which consist of CEOs from healthcare and human services in Humboldt and Del Norte counties.

January 16, 2018 to January 18, 2018 - Attended the Rural County Representatives of California (RCRC) Board of Directors meeting and new board leaders installation reception. Humboldt County Supervisor Rex Bohn was installed as Chair. RCRC membership has the thirty-five rural California counties strong and champions policies on behalf of California’s rural counties.

January 10, 2018 - Meeting with stakeholders in Humboldt County regarding Adverse Childhood Experiences to discuss what best practices are happening in our community to promote resiliency and prevent childhood trauma.

January 10, 2018 - Attended a meeting on the Native American Pathways Program, which is a partnership between the University of Illinois (through its National Center for Rural Health Professions) and Humboldt State University. The program is designed to encourage and support both Native American and non-Native American students in pursuing a career in healthcare with the goal of addressing the health care needs of Native Americans and their communities.

January 3, 2018 - The Year is starting off with a bang! Attended and spoke at the California Emerging Technology Fund's statewide Broadband Consortia in Sacramento, CA. Great group of people working to assure that at least 98% of rural households have access to broadband. Last year, CA took a step backwards in Broadband Policy by passing AB 1665, which lowered the speed requirements and made it more difficult to use state funding for innovative projects that will promote economic development.
