Building People Power

Incubated from the BHC initiative, True North Organizing Network is working to carve out space in the political process for those who have historically not been heard or included. Their mission is to “develop leadership in communities with common values across Tribal Lands, Del Norte, and Humboldt Counties. True North supports families, elders, youth, and individuals of diverse faith traditions, races, cultures, and economic capacities working together for powerful change. United, using the power of relationships and a disciplined community organizing model, True North leaders are courageously challenging social, economic, and environmental injustice in our region.”

Tangible Wins and Benefits:

  • True North staff worked with youth concerned about their friends’ struggles with alcohol abuse and designed an intervention that helped reduce alcohol theft from a local supermarket.
  • True North staff collaborated with the Yurok Tribe and the Arcata Housing Partnership to secure a 2.2 million dollar Project Homekey grant to purchase an 18-unit motel in Eureka to help address homelessness.
  • Staff from True North hosted forums on immigration rights and provided community members with free access to legal consultation and workshops.
