Research & Policy Briefs Aspen Forum for Community Solutions - Regional Work

Regional Work

CCRP, in collaboration with the Humboldt Area Foundation (HAF)/Wild Rivers Community Foundation (WRCF) and local organizations, actively participates in the Aspen Institute Opportunity Youth Forum to strengthen connections in Del Norte and Tribal Lands (DNATL), Humboldt, and the North Coast region. As part of our ongoing efforts to amplify voices, we present two essential reports. The first report focuses on data enhancement, addressing the rate of disconnection from school and work in Del Norte and Tribal Lands for young people ages 16-24. The second report emphasizes postsecondary pathways available for Native American youth in our community.

Postsecondary Pathways in the North Coast

The goal of the Postsecondary Pathways project is to identify existing pathways available for local Native American communities in the region as well as using human-centered design and an intentional approach partnering with local young people, educators, alumni, community, and tribal serving organizations to identify key themes that impact young Indigenous people in our community.

This project highlights existing pathways including the foundational work already done in the region, and prioritizes a focus on expanding on existing and supporting new potential career and education pathways through a range of action items to guide grant funding, community partners, and policy recommendations.

Opportunity Youth - Year One Findings - Del Norte and Tribal Lands

In 2021, the Humboldt Area Foundation/Wild Rivers Community Foundation and the California Center for Rural Policy launched a project funded by the Aspen Institute to assess the connection of young people in Del Norte and Tribal Lands (DNATL) to school and the workforce. In partnership with youth-serving institutions in DNATL, this coalition developed a survey tool to better understand the barriers and factors that impact Opportunity Youth (OY) in the region. This report shares the preliminary results of the survey, which focused on understanding the factors that support or hinder young people’s connection to opportunities.
